It's extremely important to keep your website up to date and add fresh content regularly. Your visitors want it and the search engines like Google will reward you for it. No one likes a stale outdated website. That includes your customers, potential customers, and Google! Your website is the first impression you may give a potential customer, so make it a positive one! You can easily accomplish this with a CMS. Here's why:
1. You're in Control: A well-designed custom Content Management System allows you to add, edit and remove content from your web pages. Being able to update your website anytime you need to is a powerful tool. Adding a new blog post, posting photos, sharing videos and simply adding text from virtually anywhere using a browser or dedicated mobile app is very convenient.
2. You Save Time and Money? A well designed CMS system means you don't have to pay a developer to add or edit content to your site which in the long run can save you money. That's a good thing, right? Well, maybe, maybe not:
Here's why; You need to have the time to do it, you need to know how and what to do and maybe more importantly, what not to do. If you don't do it correctly, you can hurt your SEO and turn visitors away. This is exactly the opposite of what you want.
Here is more to think about. Do you know how to optimize an image before you put it on your site? You don't want to upload a multi-megabyte image because it will slow down the page load and people will just click away and leave your site.
Do you know how to add the alt tag to that image? Every image should have an alt tag to facilitate screen readers and more importantly so search engines know what it is.
What about og tags for social media? Targeted keywords? You get the idea...
That being said there are certainly cases where you do want a CMS system. But you may not really need it for every piece of content on every page. Maybe you just want to be able to turn a promotional banner on or off on your home page. Blog posts, sure, but you should learn about your targeted keywords and tags if you want anyone out there to actually see your content.
What you really want is a custom CMS system. A custom CMS prepared by a developer can put controls in that auto optimize images, add og tags, give you a place for alt tag info, allow you to toggle content on and off etc. You can decide who can change what parts of the site and who can't. It can be made extremely user-friendly, uncomplicated instead of a scary, techie type page that makes you dread doing the updates.
So do you need a CMS system? Let's talk and we can figure it out together.
